Circumference: 12 1/2"
Size 8 needles
Soft Worsted Weight yarn.
Cast on 56 sts.
Brim:
row 1: K1, P1 around
row 2: P1, K1 around
row 3: K1, P1 around
row 4: P1, K1 around
row 5: K1, P1 around
row 6 :P1, K1 around
body of hat:
Work in stockinette (knit all rounds) until hat measures 4" from cast on edge.
decreases:
row 1: K6, K2tog around
row 2: knit around
row 3: K5, K2tog around
row 4: knit around
row 5: K4, K2tog around
row 6: knit around
row 7: K3, K2tog around
row 8: knit around
row 9: k2, k2tog around
row 10: knit around
row 11: k1, k2tog around
row 12: k2tog around
Cut yarn, weave end thru last sts, pull tight and finish off.

Stockinette st.--works one row knit one row purl. with this in mind your pattern does not read correctly.
Not if you are working in the round, then it is knit every row.

If you cast on an ODD number, then you don't have to change k1, p1 then p1, k1 - working k1, p1 in the round on an ODD number automatically makes seed stitch (rather than ribbing). If you need to get back to an even number, just add or take away a stitch somewhere in the body of the cap; it won't be noticed. Cute cap!

This is just the classic, simple hat I was looking for! I don't like big roll brims on baby hats, and I like knitting in the round for babies so they don't end up laying on the seam (or the brim). I don't think anyone can claim an "original" on this... I like this version and thanks so much for posting.
I think this pattern looks terrific. I'm about to start it with the remaining wool I have left after knitting longies. Thanks & I'll let you know how it turns out!

I'd like to make this in a 9-12 month size. Other sources online list the head circumference at 18-20" for that age. Any suggestions on how many more stitches I should cast on?
I'm not sure, you need an even # of stitches for the seed stitch and a repeat of 8 for the decreases. I would make a swatch, count how many stitches per inch and try to round off to a multiple of 8.

My calculations show that casting on 72 stitches would work for a 12-18 month hat (16" circumference) or 64 stitches for 6-9 months (14.75" circumference).

The body of the hat is four inches for a newborn size. I see to increase the stitches to 64 for 6 to 12 months. Does the body also need to be increased from four inches.

Bevq - all baby beanies look "remarkably" similar. Guess you're just sorry you didn't think of knitting a beanie in the round. Rude of you to comment on her pattern on her blog IMO.
I'd like to make this hat, but the yarn I'm using is a lighter weight yarn than the worsted weight in your pattern. Can you give me the gauge for this pattern so I can determine the appropriate size needle and/or number of stitches I need to cast on for my yarn?

I'm sorry I didn't write down the guage when I made it. Read the comments to this post, others have mentioned how they changed the size of the hat.
